An Overview

Debbie Swisher’s journey with the Diocese of Lexington began back in 2001, when she stepped into the role of the diocese’s first-ever controller. With a clear eye for numbers and a passion for operational efficiency, she rose to the role of CFO in 2015. It didn’t take long for Debbie to realize the challenges the diocese faced when it came to financial management. Her mission was clear: to bring consistency and transparency to financial operations. Her first move? Introducing a Standard Chart of Accounts that would create uniformity across all diocesan parishes, churches, schools, and cemeteries.

Challenge

The road to financial efficiency wasn’t easy. Debbie encountered a number of obstacles that slowed progress, the most pressing of which was the lack of financial literacy at the parish, church, school, and cemetery locations. Many leaders were unfamiliar with even the basics of budgeting and financial management, which resulted in inconsistencies across those diocesan locations. Debbie recalls one particularly eye-opening moment when she had to explain that “Utilities” was a single account that included electric, water, gas, etc.

Moreover, without a centralized software system, financial data arrived sporadically and in disparate formats, making it a logistical nightmare to ensure compliance and data integrity. Debbie needed a streamlined, centralized diocesan-centric financial management system that could bring everything together.
